NEWSLettersEVERY now and again it feels as if the things of the world become too noisy, confusing and overwhelming. As if the morning’s news brings a new shock every day. Another bout of precarious madness that scratches at the edge of reason. Days like these make me want to echo Dorothy Parker’s words: “What fresh hell is this?” How do we stay on track when it sometimes feels as if the things we care about are about to crack? How do we stay a force for good? Just before we went to print with this issue, the headlines were punctuated with anger and anxiety yet again. I read everything I could to be as informed as possible and then became still to try to make sense of it all. And…7 min

NEWSIN THE NEWSEXPERTS QUESTION LUCY LETBY CONVICTION Panel challenges the evidence A STORM of controversy has erupted around the conviction of former British nurse Lucy Letby, who was last year found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others. An international team of experts have questioned the medical evidence that led to her conviction, suggesting that natural causes and inadequate medical care, rather than her actions, may have been responsible for the babies’ deaths. Letby’s convictions, based on accusations that she’d injected air into the babies’ bloodstreams and poisoned them with insulin, largely stemmed from testimony by retired consultant paediatrician Dr Shoo Lee of Canada. However, Lee recently expressed serious concerns about the evidence, saying, “The medical findings may have been misinterpreted, leading to a possible miscarriage of justice.”…5 min
NEWSBRIDGET’S BACK!HUSBANDS: 0. Children: 2. Suitors: 2. Childminder: 1. Big knickers: still there for emergencies. Calories: no longer counting. Ciggies: gone. Chardonnay: hidden so the kids don’t see. This, in a very Bridget-Jonesy nutshell, sums up the life of the character we’ve loved since the first movie slid deliciously onto the silver screen 24 years ago. Bridget became a cult hero for millions as she navigated the complexities of work, men and self-image, dropped the f-bomb with abandon and made her disdain for the “smug married” known. Now Bridget is back in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy – and like the times, she’s changed a lot. Gone are the weight worries and the couch she once drenched with singleton tears – Bridget is now a middle-aged mom to Billy and…9 min
NEWS‘I CAN BREATHE AGAIN’I’M SO relieved. I can breathe again.” This is the message Alison Botha sends us via her lawyer – her chosen method of communication with the outside world after an aneurysm and two brain surgeries made talking on the phone tiring and difficult. Yet the voice message says it all – she received the best news she could hope for recently when the two men who attacked her and left her for dead in 1994 were sent back to jail. It’s the boost she needs as she continues her recovery – and in another message to us she says she wants people to know she’s grateful for all the love and support she’s received over the past few months. “I’m focusing on my health, on my rehabilitation and recovery,” she…6 min
NEWSSA IN TRUMP’S SIGHTSEVERYBODY knew the world was in for a bumpy ride – with Donald Trump back in the White House, emboldened after winning another four years and with nothing to lose, it seemed inevitable hasty decisions and rapid-fire executive orders would be the order of the day. South Africans assumed that, perched on the southern tip of Africa, far from the corridors of power in Washington, we’d be able to escape the chaos. So it came as a surprise when, seemingly out of the blue, Trump signed an executive order freezing aid to South Africa. Then he ordered US officials to grant refugee status to “white Afrikaners” who, he claims, are victims of “government-sponsored race-based discrimination”. The order states that the recently enacted expropriation act, which allows for the confiscation of…9 min
